It’s definitely her least adventurous album, I don’t even really think that’s up for discussion. And even if we’re talking like, purely acoustic records I think Unknown Rooms is a whole lot better. Tho technically not an “Album”, Boyfriend and Flatlands are still two of her best songs and I don’t think there’s anything here that really comes close save Mother Road.



I do really adore that song.

Did it today and I still just don’t vibe with this album as much as her others. I get what she was going for with a more straightforward singer songwriter approach, but I think The Dark is just a lot better at it. I know that record has a more alt rock thing going on where this is almost entirely acoustic, but even then I think the acoustic songs on The Dark are better than mostly everything here.



Like, Death is Not The End is so fucking incredible, the way it starts totally tricks you into thinking it’s just another ballad but the way it morphs into that droning soundscape is just amazing. I also think this one peaks at track 1 and it just doesn’t really come anywhere near those heights again. Tbh if I saw her live and she played anything off this, aside from Mother Road and Deranged for Rock and Roll, I’d probably kinda check out a little. The rest of the songs feel like the “obligatory acoustic song” on Pain is Beauty, Abyss, and Hiss Spun.



In the end I still like it, because Chelsea is a phenomenal vocalist, her pengame is also just always reliable, and the songs are competently assembled, but idk, every time I hear it I just feel left wanting more. It felt like she got kinda complacent here and there’s just no boundary pushing. I think the same could be said about The Dark, but that album is just way more instrumentally varied and has harder hitting lyrics, to me at least.



BUT I do remember butt saying that this is a perfect fall album and I do agree with that. I listened to it while walking my dogs and it just felt *right*
