"do people really not get that periphery refuse to take themselves too seriously and they add silly stupid things on albums and have stupid albums names intentionally? funny seeing people get mad about it. they have figured out how to troll trolls and it's genius."
Had a conversation with Exhale about this very thing a couple of pages back. Periphery is nothing if not good at rusting jimmies.
Inb4 deathschool calls me out on my dated meme reference. xD

I’m just not sure how you can listen to Reptile and be like “yeah that’s such weak songwriting bro”. Like idk, I guess I just want someone to explain that opinion or at least attempt to defend it. Some songs are weak here from a songwriting standpoint (It’s Only Smiles, Crush) but some are pretty much undeniably good, or at the very least decent. Combine that with some insane shredding and vocal work and I’m just not sure how you can rate this a 1. I’ve listened to some really lame butt metal records this year (Soilwork, Soen) and even though I didn’t like them, I still gave them credit where credit is due. Couldn’t imagine giving those a 1, even if I’ll never listen to them ever again

ButtBoy calm your outrageous fanboyism for this band for a moment and realize maybe “insane shredding” isn’t a selling point for some of us

I think Reptile is weak because of the sever lack of variation and growth the track shows over the course of 17 minutes. The main riff doesn’t do much aside from chug along with some little flourishes here and there and some slight drop-offs that are probably supposed to build tension. I just find them very weak and plodding. After that it has a sort of build up into a generic breakdown before going into the outro. The music just does not excite me and while Spencer’s vox are decent enough, I don’t find his melodies interesting enough to carry the song on their own.
I just expect a track that’s almost 20 minutes to throw me some curve balls, especially if the band is tagged under “prog metal”.

Yeah I don’t understand why people are always like “omg they’re so talented”. I mean yeah but it’s pointless wankery with no substance and it sucks so if you wanna 5 that then more power to you.

Yeah, whole album is just one-note chugging tbh. Especially Reptile.

I would call something shreddy if its just chugging with few little flourishes here and there that fail to break up the monotony.
