it's not like "how can you like THIS... UGH YOU SUCK". It's more like "Wow, people like this... i wish i knew why".

"There are multitudes of ways and reasons to experiance and enjoy music, the infantile notion of boxing yourself in over misperceptions of authenticity so you can feel like you have a more valid or worthwhile musical depth than other people and chronically auto-fellate yourself over it isnt impressive or remarkable."
can i get an amen up in here

let the people love, but also; and more relevant to this thread: let the people hate! without disgruntled criticism, art will become insipid and boring.
How can we ever have an accurate gauge for what makes an album "good" if we don't have a gauge for what makes an album "bad?"

Also there's nothing wrong with being passionate about having a distaste for something. It doesn't mean you have a fragile ego lmao.

tbh it does

Why tho? I feel like a lot of people just get offended when you talk shit about an artist which makes no sense to me. You aren't Ariana, you aren't Earl Sweatshirt, why do you care so much if I think their output is middling and reflects poorly on the genres they represent?
Do you not vocalize it when you play a video game and you don't enjoy it? a movie? a show? fashion? comedy? This new trend of gatekeeping negative opinions on music will only hurt music quality in the long run.

This is approaching the amount of bumps from Dangerous Woman (only accounting the staff review).

there's a difference between defending an album with arguments and attacking anyone with a criticism on a personal level. That's low and shows more of a fragile ego, imo.
edit: Also, i suppose we can all agree than an attack on a piece of music, as harsh or biased as it can get is nothing to get offended by on personal level.

I mean I'll attack a hardcore contrarian who just hates popular shit all day, but the criticisms to this album aren't that.

yea i'm all for expression of oppositional opinions man. i could be wrong but i think we were more talking about it being a little bit tedious and annoying when people just incessantly wave around their disparagement and puzzlement at the display of variant opinions.

of course, it's foolish to linger on the very simple fact that people have all different tastes and opinions. Trends and fads cannot, however, be brushed off simply as "people like what they like", it's never that simple.

There are two sides to a coin.
ok maybe not the best analogy. I'll try another one.
There are six sides to every die. Nah that wouldn't work either especially if you're a D&D player.
uh.....we have different opinions, and that's alright.
Nailed it.

thing is people shit on pop records like this for being "substanceless" while praising metal albums like beast in black for example for being "mindless fun"...... obviously that's not the case for everyone, you specifically might not be a hypocrite in that sense but in general that's obviously what happens

Well, I think if an album aims for ‘fun’ then whatever the genre there’ll be no faking it, either that connects with someone or it doesn’t
I doubt after ten listens of not feeling something is fun that there’ll then be a hallelujah moment after listen 11 - ‘oh, this is actually fun!’
