I've been on this website for a decade and can vouch that this place, and every other forum for anything ever, has an all consuming hivemind that will tell you what you should and shouldn't like. RYM has a slightly higher sample size but a significantly lower rating. Coincidence?

Not coincidence, but not as sinister as you make it out to be. Like you said, any forum-based platform will attract a specific type of person, for a multitude of reasons; this one just happens to be full of people who are passionate about their tastes, and on average rate on a metric that is more skewed to positive ratings. RYM tends to attract the converse -- a lot of users skewed toward negatively rating things, which explains the low averages. Which is fine. Far from a hivemind, though; just a particular kind of person. Sputnik has a fairly high concentration of contrarians -- which again, not a bad thing. Plenty of people in this thread have a negative view of this album and I've not seen one of them being demonised. So long as people's thoughts and opinions are genuine (for the most part), I see no problem.
