idk PBTT is way less energetic musically and way less passionate vocally.
TWY still has some punk-pop roots in their song structures and their big choruses.
idk I can't listen to both bands and say they're in the same genre, but I guess if Soupy's vocals don't do it for you then I can't convince you otherwise

pretty different bands up into these two newest lps
and i wouldnt put them in the same genre specifically - like i said, itws more like theyre in the same general ballpark of washed out indie-emo-punk (with this leaning more towards pop punky emo)
im just saying im sick of the new wave basically
inb4 this band isnt part of the wave (thats not the point)

Can someone please explain to me how this is better than No Closer to Heaven? This album seems like a downgrade in nearly every aspect
|
| |
no closer to heaven is pretty much a lot of underwritten pop punk snoozers that dont have anything close to the same amount of punch that greatest gen had. and the non pop-punk tracks weren't that well written either....

Half the tracks on NCTH are great to amazing. The other half are meh. All the ones on this are at least great apart from Dad and Sober

Does anyone else cringe really hard at the "I heard somebody cry" line in the closer?

I cringe at a lot of this album to at least some degree, if I'm being honest.

"no closer to heaven is pretty much a lot of underwritten pop punk snoozers that dont have anything close to the same amount of punch that greatest gen had"
it had two of the band's best songs and a whole lot of forgettable material

I'd say a good chunk of NCTH had some of the bands best ever songs (Cardinals, Cigarettes & Saints, I Don't Like Who I Was Then, Stained Glass Ceilings, etc) and the other tracks didn't stand out near as much.
But this entire album feels like NCTH's lesser tracks: still solid, but could do better
I understand the problems with NCTH, I just don't understand what makes this one so much better

I really agree with this and the rating 100%. This never reaches the highs of NCTH and honestly, not even most of the NCTH "lesser" tracks. I mean, give me "Bluest Things on Earth" over "We Look Like Lightning" any day.

I don't like his singing on this album. He has gone overboard with the emotional singing style. On one of the songs the screaming is so intense that it doesn't sound tuneful anymore. And so many of the verses across this album have this contrived, overly-emotional pronunciation to them that just makes me cringe.
I mean, Raining in Kyoto is a great song, but the way he makes it sound like he can't get through the lyrics "I've been so fucking afraid" because it is so emotional that he is struggling to sing through the tears... I don't buy it. So many of the lyrics on this album's verses sound like he was trying to force some tears out while singing them. Or at least trying to convince us that he is sad. It takes cues from a lot of modern pop/indie music in the way he throws in quirky pronunciations and affectations, rather than just singing the words in the purest sense.
There are a lot of absolutely banging choruses on this thing. But then when it drops back down to soft, gentle, overly emotional verses, on every single song, it makes me feel a little uneasy. Man that Pyramids of Salt chorus is so good, I wish the verses didn't let it down.

NCTHs lesser tracks way worse than this albums lesser tracks
NCTH has better highs for sure but this is the more consistent record
TGG>Suburbia> tho

the choruses are the worst part of this album, that Pyramids of Salt hook is straight out of an All Time Low song lmao
