I agree that it is a bit overrated. I still think it's a rock solid track, but it's in my bottom half of songs on this record. Feels like a slightly less fun version of 'Green Light.'

it feels like it's trying too hard to be some kind of millennial anthem/call to arms and that in itself puts me off

revisited pure heroine this morning and it's still an excellent album but melodrama really shows how much more capable she is now of developing a fully realized concept

feel like this is just a convincing rehash of PH but boy is it catchy

You can tell she was only 16 when she made PH because the list of topics she was singing about were very limited (parties not being everything they're cracked up to be, anti-vanity, being a teen is hard, her boyfriend driving her around) and she's definitely grown as an artist now so it feels a bit unfair to call it a rehash. You'd never have heard something like Liability on PH.

Also revisiting the whole 'boyfriend in the car' topic on Hard Feelings has added poignancy because this time it's when they presumably decided to call it quits or when she knew the relationship wasn't going to work as opposed to on PH when it was comforting for her to drive around the suburbs with her boyfriend. In a way this album is her losing her innocence and that's reflected in the darker and more reflective lyrics.
