doof there is absolutely no possible way that you can backup the argument that you can determine an artists process as 'pretentious' through listening to an album. being pretentious is means you are projecting an inflated sense of consequence for affect. it implies that the motives of someones art are shallow and transparent and that they do not possess the level of competence, culture, significance, influence etc as they project.

you can't know if an artist has an inflated sense of self when it comes to these aspects just by listening to an album. if you hear them speak of their art however you can get an insight into their actual attitudes and proficiencies etc and then you can make the conclusion that they are pretentious. but saying an album is pretentious as a stand-alone is nothing but an assumption, a silly, stupid, assumption that basically just condemns an album without supplying any sort of insight whatsoever. as you are a reviewer you should know better tbh.

The Jenny Hval album just feels really mannered borderline smug and the wordiness doesn't make up for the song writing being boring a lot of the time for me. The songs don't feel good enough to justify the grand artistic concept and self satisfied tone lol

if i might comment, at risk of making this discussion longer and/or get yelled at by someone, i'd like to add that it's entirely possible to have pretenses with your music. like, isn't that part of the point, to write music that's deep and stuff? i mean, if the artist doesn't believe in what they write, how is it supposed to be anything more then? like imagine matt berninger deciding "fuck this, gonna write some normal ass lyrics and be another one on the indie rock bunch" that'd be boring af

Yeah season 3-6 were the golden years of the show I would argue, but even when Larry left and the quality dropped in the last 2 seasons its still head and shoulders better than most other comedy series. Curb your enthusiasm was great as well, but kind of overstays its welcome by the 5/6th season i reckon. Larry is a comedic genius but it was the interplay between the 4 that made the Seinfeld so classic and Curb sort of misses that.
