I think Wonder What's Next/This Type of Thinking/Vena Sera put a lot more prominence on Pete's really good clean vocals. It worked well with the musical undertones just because Pete's a better vocalist than most in the genre. There are also just a lot more melodic moments on those albums in general. Problem is, band basically didn't evolve at all after that -- I remember being so excited by "Envy" and "The Meddler" since it hinted at a move to a more atmospheric sound. Then Gargola dropped and they were clearly going back in a more aggressive direction, and it sucked out all the atmosphere and I was kinda pissed and wrote a probably-too-harsh-2 review.
tl;dr Some Chevelle fans are fans b/c of Pete's vocals/melodies, which makes them not as big fans of the LG/TNC sound

Best song on this album is A Miracle tbh

ProjectFreak you nailed it about The Meddler, last time I really enjoyed a Chevelle song. I just don't think they bring it hard enough these days when trying to be heavy, cranking the bass up in the mix doesn't work if the energy just isn't there.

Yeah I love the atmosphere of HOTTB
Revenge is like the best song ever
Also Prima Donna
Also Glimpse Of The Con
Also The Meddler
God I love hats off to the bull

punchline is still like top 3 chevelle for me

HOTTB is super uneven but Envy and Meddler are top 10 Chevelle.
Gmork, yeah I think that's also due to Pete. They're over-reliant on effects and riffs to simulate aggression instead of letting Pete loose and focusing on atmosphere.

I think part of why I dislike this album may have been that I really just don't listen to this music much anymore and I had just started listening to rap so I wasn't really in the mood (and still probably wouldn't be now though tbh as that bass comment gmork said is spot on)

am i the only one who thinks this is way ahead of stuff like sci fi and hats off? okay then
what the fuck you talking about atmosphere punchline has the best atmosphere of any song from them

Wrong

Punchline is pretty good on that front but it's nowhere near what they pulled off on Envy. Or dare I say Bend the Bracket.

Omg bend the bracket ;-;

Punchline is enjoyable because it has some variance in the sea of monotony, on any of their first 4 or 5 albums it would have been a weak track.
