again, indie pop doesn't have a distinct sound, it's basically pop made by less-mainstream artists

but plenty of artists that aren't on the charts make "just pop", which is certainly not indie pop.
indie and alt rock/pop/folk/etc. all have their own sounds now. they aren't simply a descriptor anymore.

The word "pretentious" lost all meaning ages ago :/

Care to provide examples? Because from what I know it started out having a distinct sound (a subgenre of alt rock) but broadened out to pretty much anything pop that isn't released by a major record label

let's put it this way. the smiths are basically the biggest indie pop band ever.
yet they've charted numerous times (tho not necessarily highly all the time)

The thing about "indie" genres are that it honestly feels like there's a distinct sound that goes beyond "a band without major label backing" but it's really hard to describe it. It isn't "pretentious" or "hipster" in sound at least.

janelle monae is definitely pop and not indie pop (she's a whole lot of other things as well, but nonetheless). this song didn't appear on the charts, despite being somewhat popular. bad boy and wondaland are her primary labels, and aren't at all major. however, atlantic records did have a hand on the album (but didn't seem to have touched this single in particularly).

Maybe I'm mistaken, but Charlie never rubbed off as a chick who tries to act like she's better than most radio pop.
A good example of "pretentious" is that Blurryface album. Considering that Tyler constantly knocks mainstream radio constantly on the album while making mainstream radio music that is for the most part hardly better than mainstream radio pop.

nothing sententious about lorde. she simply aims to be a bit more artsy and "meaningful" than most radio hits. and she does exactly that. so i don't see an issue here.

Seriously how can a band like the black keys be considered pretentious? I mean sure the two members are kind of dicks but nowhere do I hear them trying to be above other two-man blues-rock groups.

I think you need to read the lyrics to Royals again because you didn't seem to understand them first time
Lorde is nowhere near pretentious

tbh I always figured Janelle Monae was 'indie pop' due to her appearance on fun.'s fluke hit "We Are Young"

Yo shark, have you ever given Janelle a full spin? The ArchAndroid is soul pop perfection.

weird, I always figured Janelle Monae was 'indie pop' due to her appearance on fun.'s fluke hit "We Are Young" honestly, that's not really ur fault. while janelle makes highly prince/jackson/outkast/badu inspired music, she hit it off extremely well with the indie scene and helped form the ~very indie~ alt r&b scene that we have today.
while often associated with indie pop and alternative r&b, she herself is neither of those. simply pop and contemporary r&b.
