@virathius you would hate steely dan tbh, its impeccable production, great lyrics (not very saccharine stuff or breakup lyrics like indie)"

I must have missed the parts in albums like The Lonesome Crowded West, Surfer Rosa, Zen Arcade, Marquee Moon, and Is This Real where they go on about saccharine breakup lyrics for 50 minutes but hey if you wanna live in a world where stereotypes are the default then I guess that's on you.

"the alf stuff has ADD songwriting like the first couple opeth records but somehow it worked better there imo"

I'm not seeing the whole take that this was too busy at all. Especially with other Tech Death albums in mind. This thing is pretty accessible for how much it throws at you.

I still like With Fear a smidge better but I should listen to this more often too.

Not only are both Alf albums shorter but they have more actual ideas than either of the first two Opeth releases so that's just wrong.

I might revisit Opeth's discography someday.

"more 'actual' ideas at a faster rate is surely the definition of ADD songwriting lol"

Depends on how unreasonable your bar for something having ADD songwriting is. Besides, it's not necessarily even at a faster rate. I'd say songs like Within and Neverwhere take their time for the kind of style being played here. Even songs like Night Comes Blood Black which are more frantic often revisit certain sections in a compelling way even after a diversion into another part that is far different.

I remember not liking this very much as a teenager when I was really into SotS but nowadays I really only ever feel like ever listening to With Fear and a little bit of this. I still think SotS is an okay album but man does it ever get way more monotonous. Like I wouldn't care too much about the simplified riffs too much of they varied it up more often like on Cold or Under a Serpent Sun.

While I hear this again I should also do Terminal Spirit Disease because it's been even longer since I've heard that one.
