Steven's an excellent guitarist and recruits other amazing guitarists, but Guthrie's absence is slightly felt on the new album

But his absence would be felt if he left any other band as well. Such a mind blowing guitarist that is technically insane but melodically and emotionally brilliant at the same time. His bends are insanely tasty

I think Mark's a good drummer but overrated, but on 3 years older his drumming is just perfect for the song. Especially during the sections with the main rapid riff.

Not an easy secction, but mark really plays so well and compliments the music so incredible that the drums feel at one with the other instruments

it gets me how you have this at a 3. You seem to enjoy it a lot more.

3 Years Older is one of the best songs Steven has ever written

I enjoy it, but at the end of it feel underwhelmed. It's a good album, but it feels like formulaic SW music

This is the 4th or 5th best album he's ever been involved in, in terms of writing and recording at least half of the material, which is out of a lot. 3 Years Older is fantastic and the instrumental version is great because you can hear the quiet parts better without the singing, and there's a lot going on to pick up on. Sounds like a modern, lush King Crimson composition at some parts.

without some particular order, a top five for me would be:

The Sky Moves Sideways

Deadwing

The Raven that Refused to Sing

Hand.Cannot.Erase.

Storm Corrosion

Up the Downstair
Staircase Infinities
The Sky Moves Sideways
Storm Corrosion

As I'm sure most of you regulars know everything else I've heard from Wilson ranges from average to shit for me, except maybe Signify which is a mixed bag with some good moments.

Signify is one of PT's best IMO especially when it veers into krautrock

In Absentia

The Sky Moves Sideways

Stupid Dream

Deadwing

HCE

Signify and Storm Corrosion would be next probably

This ranking is of his albums as they've been officially released. Deadwing has the most amount of his best, most mind-blowing material, but 3 tracks just lower it a few notches. Lightbulb Sun also would easily make the top 5 if Four Chords and How is Your Life were replaced with a few from the Recordings compilation from the same era. I made a playlist of what that would look like to me, and it's an amazing listening experience. I'll make a list of it soon for others.

In a lot of ways I prefer Stupid Dream and Deadwing over In Absentia

In Absentia has some solid moments but is far and away his most overrated album imo

Jamie "hates" SW, but is secretly in love with him

"you going to the Tull 50th anniversary tour Jamie?"

I'm not actually. I would have loved ('loved' being an understatement) to have seen them in the 70's (or even early 80's) if I was alive then but now with the "band" as it is (i.e. just post-throat surgery Anderson) it's just not the same and surprisingly I don't have a great desire to see them/him now.

"Jamie "hates" SW, but is secretly in love with him"

I love him as a remixer and "remaster-er" of classic prog albums. The Jethro Tull remasters have been fantastic. If that's all he was doing now, maybe I would 'love' him.
