Compared to Autechre, anything Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin ever did is disgraceful.

hell you can even hear borders being pushed as far back as Cavity Job (see around the 4:20 mark of Accelera 1&2 [PROTO-BLADELORES COSMOS]). though i do agree with both rob and sean when they say incunabula and amber sound a bit cheesy these days. not that their necessarily CHEESY per se, but those two are their only albums that sound relatively commonplace in that early stage of IDM. of course that doesn't make them bad, but to me they feel like two really well executed albums that could have been made by any of those early names [aphex twin, the black dog, B12, etc]. everything after that point was autechre in total control of the landscape of experimental electronic music.

i disagree only in that i think amber was the first record to do that. it may sound similar to incunabula and the other early warp artists at first glance but if you really take a close look at the kind of sounds they juxtaposition on that record it really is singularly unique and has never really been replicated
ive seriously never heard anything that sounds like peizo in my entire life.

"I like Autechre, but I just can't find attachment to them emotionally because of how cold and lifeless their music sounds."
I thought the same for a while, but that's completely backwards. I'd say Autechre have an extreme amount of emotional depth, its just not necessarily pretty or easy to identify. People seem to forget that "cold" and "lifeless" are very much human emotions as well, and I think Autechre relentlessly covering that sonic ground makes for something far more revealing and true about the human condition. It also makes any hint of pretty, like a sweeping drone in the background, sound all the more spiritual in opposition to the intensity fluttering before you.

your right that there are moments in amber that supercede that idea

literally couldnt have put it better myself. in a sonic landscape of overly emotional, sentimental music the biggest statement autechre ever made was exploring the "other" nature of how sound can be both impressionistic and expressionistic.
