by character do you mean feel? or atmosphere? moreso feel and uniqueness. i mean, character and fiction for example are fantastic albums, but the modern edge of those kinda takes away the vibe and 90s feel of traditional melodeath. 90s era in flames (including clayman to an extent) i feel mastered that sound, and same with the gallery. there are a couple other 90s melodeath albums i could throw in here, but in flames is the only band that did that sound right consistently for a long time.

Ok KILL think about it, Whoracle is their most consistent album by far. You don't even reach an ok song until you hit Worlds Within the Margin, and thats fucking track 8 of 11. And don't forget that Jotun, Gyroscope, The Hive, Jester Script Transfigured, Episode 666 and Whoracle are easily some of the best songs they've ever done.
