I feel this is the sound they have been trying to hit since Discouraged Ones. They had a lot of close calls, but this is their true essence. The fact it took so long in their discography does not do it justice.
Way I see it Brave Murder Day was old Katatonia and Dead End Kings is new Katatonia in their truest forms.

And Discouraged Ones is second phase Katatonia.

Discouraged Ones has a lot more atmosphere than this

I would argue they had two different types of atmosphere, as opposed to one besting the other.

"I would argue they had two different types of atmosphere, as opposed to one besting the other."
Yeah Disc Ones had more of a brown, locked yourself in a cabin in the woods, escaping from reality type vibe.
This one has a grayish-blue walking down an urban street reminiscing about past hardships type vibe.

That was really descriptive.
They are definently two different eras of sound.

I like this, but that electronic drum beat at the start of leech is really shitty. Buildings rocks. m/

Their music always sounds so depressing.

Guys, listen to Wisdom of Crowds, it's Jonas singing HAPPY LYRICS
|

I dont want to feel more depressed than I already am. That's why I only listen to uplifting music these days. I quote Nick Hexum: "Be positive and love your life". I try to live by that.
