Most of Meshuggah takes time to settle in, except for DEI, Contradictions Collapse and Chaosphere. Those albums are much more straight forward, as great as they are. That's kind of why I never really understood the hype for their early years, as opposed to their much more complex/atmospheric later albums.

I think this is better than obZen pretty easily, but this doesn't have any songs as good as Combustion or Pravus imo

Behind the Sun and Demiurge for me. My personal favorite off ObZen is Dancers, Pravus is a close second though.

Dancers!!!! Probably my all time favorite Meshuggah song. The ending of the song where the lead guitar is playing a 5/4 pattern over the snare/ride in 4/4 and the other guitars doing their usually crazy compound meter stuff just blows my mind every time I hear it. 3 different meters layered over each other at once=total sensory overload!
I was hoping for more of that 3 level meter layering on Koloss, but the only song I noticed it on so far is briefly at the end of Do Not Look Down. Their is a quiet lead guitar playing a 3 note pattern against the 4/4 drums and crazy lower guitars. Technically 3 meters, but the 3 against 2 thing is no where near as inventive as that 5/4 riff from Dancers. Still Koloss rules hard, and is getting better with each listen.

Do not get this on itunes. Just downloaded "Break those bones" to test the quality, and its awful! The bass sounds horrible compared to the Youtube vids and Spotify versions of that song. I'm gonna go get the CD today

@lucca yeah, Koloss is more straightforward. and you forgot to mention that haake follows the guitar with his bass drum in that part in dancers, while still holding the 4/4 beat. but then again he does polyrythms all the time lol
incredible musicianship indeed
