Your mom is right. The québécois French speaking is different from the one in France, all like the USA English speaking is different from the British speaking. Here in Québec we have a bunch of distinct expressions, and we don't pronounce each and every syllables. Harmonium is a perfect example of that peculiar language of ours.

I guess you need to speak French to really detect a difference. Both have their charm. European French is tighter, more polished and Québécois French is more loosed, taken less seriously if you will.
