I mean it's admittedly a step in the correct direction.

Thing is, Sonic Youth are about texture and atmosphere whereas Dream Theater are about melody and notes. Anyone confusing the expansion of ideas to explore atmosphere with doing so to squeeze in as many notes and solos as possible just doesn't get this.

Just to summarize what I've read on this page from comments past, This and Dirty are incredible, a step below EVOL an Sister but still great. Also I never fathomed that people would compare Sonic Youth and DT.

What about this do you prefer? The riffs on Sister are just out if this world good to me.

I've just always loved the atmosphere that these songs give off. I love both albums but this edges sister by just a bit.

Sister's melodies and songwriting are just as good as here if not better but it doesn't have what I think is the biggest strength of Daydream Nation - long, atmospheric guitar soundscapes (my favourite being "The Sprawl").

Alt, you make some really good points. An I agree that it's a huge appealing aspect to this record.
Unpopular opinion: Dirty is just as good as this for totally different reasons.

I could easily see someone preferring Sister since it brings completely different ideas to the table. I do in fact prefer Daydream though.
