What cool drugs do I need to be on to understand that from listening to Green Day wail about politics?

I dunno. maybe If it was one of the first albums you ever heard and it made you discover guitar and joining bands and ultimately lead you to more music you would love it as much as me?

It actually was one of the first albums I have ever heard. I've never learned to play guitar but I am able to play jazz music on a trombone. I still don't see the allure to the music OR how you can get that story from the album. You'd have to be batshit.

American Idiot isn't exactly a well written concept album.

Yes, it is.

Well no shit the lyrics typically tell the story. But in this case the lyrics don't tell the story. It's pretty abstract to me, a little too abstract to actually work fluently. I really don't know how everyone can gather the story that BJA was intending to be gathered. It just seems like pretentious bullshit to me.

That's Billie's version of the story, nobody said you have to feel the same way about the album. If everybody got the same ideas from the same things life would be a waste of time. As far as pretentious bullshit goes, this album is pretentious bullshit, but American Idiot was honest and eager and pretty straightforward, not abstract to the point of incoherency.

Erasedcitizen knows where it's at. The lyrics on this album are bloated and forced. AI was genius.

Ehh. I still don't agree with you at all about AI. But I suppose I'll just give up. This isn't going to change your opinion or mine.

It isn't an opinion, American Idiot is simply not an abstract album.

^ Agreed, simply by analyzing the lyrics you could pretty easily prove that objectively imo.

My idea of the concept of American Idiot is a little different to the one above, but I guess that's the beauty of interpretation

The concept behind American Idiot is that they've become "idiots" themselves, creating a piece of shit to fit in with the majority of mainstream music on the market today.

I don't mind genuine dislike for this band but a lot of it seems to me just people hopping on the "Let's be cool and fit in on Sputnik by hating on bands like Green Day who are generally disliked and rated poorly".

No I genuinely dislike this band and I didn't even like them way back in the day either.
