Hot take(?): Jimmy, He Whispers is absolutely the best song here

"Jimmy" is top 3 for me along with the title track and "I've Got Friends"
I'VE GOT FRIENDS IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES
I KNOW WHAT THEY WANT AND I KNOW THEY DON'T WANT ME TO STAY

Still love this, but "Pride" brings this whole thing to a grinding halt.
"In My Teeth" is easily the most underrated Manchester Orchestra song though.

Second listen through of this and I’m really impressed. Good shit, should have started listening to these guys years ago. Only complaint is that this lacks variety a bit until the final few songs. It’s mostly just pure as the driven snow rock, but done really well. So far it seems like Virgin had a bit more variety but I’m not sure which I like more yet. Both 4s but I may bump this after a few more listens depending.
Favorite songs now are The Only One, Shake It Out, Tony the Tiger, The River and the t/t. I see a lot of people love I’ve Got Friends but I find it kinda boring and redundant.

How so? Pride is awesome, especially the last few minutes. It actually kicks the album up for me coming after I’ve Got Friends and before In my Teeth (two least favorites here — still pretty good though).

Uhhhh yeah, this album is fucking my face about right now. Shake It Out is a masterpiece epic (even though it’s only a modest 5 minutes).
I was torn between whether this or Virgin was better yesterday, but a third listen tells me this is definitely superior.

About to try this one. I love the debut but really don’t like Simple Math.
Hope I dig. m/

Alright I’m loving this too.

Yeah this is their best I’ve heard so far.
I can’t really get into Simple Math either! Which is weird because I thought it would be my fav from what I read. I still like it and it’s a 3.5, but it hasn’t really grown at all like I’d hoped. About to move on to Cope after only five days with Simple Math.

Okay, I'm revisiting this for the thousandth time, and Pride is such an underrated MO track. It's so purposeful, and Andy has some of his best vocals. I'm still floored by the fact that Pride and I Can Feel a Hot One are on the same record, and it works.

Call this a wild guess but I reckon these guys like/listen to Modest Mouse.

Yeah this OK, but I feel like half the melodies have been lifted from something I’ve already heard, which is odd as I haven’t exactly done a comprehensive deep dive into this sort of thing.
Black Mile is still standing head and shoulders above this and the debut, not sure I’ll check the others. It just gives me the urge to check mWY’s discog properly instead.

Simple Math is certainly worth a listen. I like Cope too, but most people don't.

With all due respect, Cope is utter dookie

Simple Math is great. And yeah, I like Cope quite a bit also, despite it definitely being their worst album.
I went chronologically on their discog and it worked really well for me. As much as I loved all the albums along the way, nothing could prepare me for how much A Black Mile would blow me away.

i mean i'm not denying that cope is easily their worst album but it's still fun, relatively short, and has some bangers on it.
