album rules review drools

That seems to be one of the only metal bands he listens to. I don't understand where this is coming from. His pie chart says 9% metal, which considering he has rated over 550 albums is quite a large amount. And this isn't even taking into account the thrash, death and black metal albums and albums which he hasn't rated etc etc.

I assumed that you didn't like metal based on your "understandable" comment earlier. Guess I misinterpreted that.
And name dropping is fine if it's in any way applicable to the review, but in this case, none of the bands mentioned have anything to do with Mastodon.
The bizarre Celtic Frost reference was obviously intended to imply that only diehard metalheads would be interested in this album. That would be an odd statement to close with even if he didn't use a band with virtually nothing in common with Mastodon to make the point. If anything, Mastodon has alienated some of their diehard metal fans with this album for being too "proggy" and not metal enough. This album definitely appeals to a larger audience outside of the metal community than any of their previous albums.
Once again, I don't care if he dislikes the album, but what I presume his motivations for writing the review to be are obnoxious, and a lot of this review just doesn't make sense. Even some of the parts that do make sense are mostly just criticisms of the prog genre in general. Criticizing a prog album for having a fantastically absurd concept is a bit redundant (and no, you are not supposed to take the concept seriously).

Try reading my comment - I didn't say that everyone outside the metal community likes it or even should like it. I said this album appeals to MORE non-metal fans than their previous albums. Check the billboard charts if you think that isn't true. That wasn't even intended as a defense of the album - I was just pointing out the absurdity in his implication that only those with Celtic Frost tattoos would like this album. That nonsense actually shows up on metacritic.

this definitely appeals to more people than their past albums, especially Leviathan

I've listened to a few tracks here and there before but this is the first time I've listened to a full Mastodon record, so I'm now really keen to hear others.

The first Track is great but the rest of the album is hard to sit through. And I wasn't expecting to hear ugly sabbath like vocals after hearing Blood and Thunder.
