It is still awful as always but if this had good production it would be at least a 2.5. If the songs were shortened maybe a 3 or a 3.5.
After listening to the edited version of Some Kind of Monster I see this actually had potential but Bob Rock dropped the ball here.

All within my hands would be great to if it didn’t transform into a cringe fest like never before

Agreed. At least they made it into something listeable for S&M2.

'Some Kind of Monster' slays as well
People would like this record more if the tracks were only 3 and half minutes long.

idk about that. that wouldn't improve how god awful the drums sound (and any other huge production issue here)

Chopping every song in half would help, but only a little. It would help the album be over sooner.

IMO james' voice is worse than the snare on this

Lars also uses the open snare in I Disappear but it's actually tuned correctly

I Disappear rules. An album of that would have been so much better.
James was definitely having a rough time here. He sounds pretty bad on the live tracks off Some Kind of Monster as well. Dude's doing so much better now. The songs they performed on Howard Stern recently sound ridiculously good.

This + the album being released on schedule. Had it been released during the height of nu metal hysteria instead of like three years later in 2003 when anything even half resembling nu metal was suddenly considered wack... I could easily see people enjoying this despite trash production, and there being a nostalgia for it that obviously isn't present today.
I'd love to see someone edit all the songs down so that the album is only 40 minutes.

James’ horrible lyrics and delivery is just as bad as the snare on this album

No idea if that link will work but I went into Reason and shaved like 2:30 off the title track without breaking a sweat.

I remember reading back in the day that I Dissapear was the first song written for their upcoming album, and that fans of the song will be pleased with the new album’s sound. However I think Jason’s departure fucked that all up.

As a 90's kid, it feels really sad that the moment you start listening to metallica and learning they're going to release an album when you have just started listening to them, it becomes the worst album they released at that point.

It was thanks to a friend's co-worker of my father that it introduced me to:
- Metallica
- Iron maiden (Kinda, because I didn't dig them until 10 years later)
- Nirvana
He tried to lend me mechanical animals and portrait of an American Family but I refused.
