"way too long for its own good, but it has some great ideas"
I mean that's pretty much Dream Theater in a nutshell, isn't it?

True, though it's even more apparent here than in every other album I've heard.

This is the most troll band I've ever heard. More troll than joke bands like Atila and Infant Annihalator. They bait you with tracks like Panic Attack and The Dark Eternal Night you heard as a kid on guitar hero and rock band, then they put you through an entire hour and a half of straight cheese with one random Metallica song. Then they make one entire heavy metal album called Train of Thought then go back to being cheesy pop-hair rock the next album. There's multiple detours to nu-metal, literally copying Rush riffs, trying to be soft Metallica, then going back to their own style.

I respect them for being this troll. I mostly don't regret doing this full discography listen because it's fun to see how they will jebait me with each album.

You can accuse DT for many things, but "pop-hair rock"... You just cannot call a band "troll" when it has recorded Images And Words, Awake, A Change of Seasons, Scenes From a Memory. Incosistent, yes. Painfully cheesy at times, yes. Miles behind their days of prime, yes. Lost in mediocrity nowadays, yes. Troll, no.

I guarantee the vocalist tells himself every day "ladies and gentlemen, we got 'em" as he sips from a pineapple-shaped mug writing his next love song.

It's hard to explain what I mean by troll. This band is playing serious meta-games with their listeners, it's hard to comprehend the 4d chess they're playing.

Labrie in general doesn't write things for DT so your comment serves your trivial quote hunting. But even if he wrote, it's better being a bad composer than a bad poser.

I kinda get why they did it but splitting up "In The Presence" def hurts the flow of the album imo.

Also all the non-Labrie vocals kinda suck, sorry Mike

Yeah, Mike recently shit talked Labrie's vocals but uhhhh he's not exactly Rob Halford.

Yeah, agreed. I really don't get what many people are actually saying about Labrie. That if he wasn't the main singer of DT, DT would be more... what? You know, it's not Labrie I blame for the mediocre days DT are living...

Labrie is great so long as he doesn't write the lyrics

Like any other great band, there's a window for operating at the highest level. Their window has now passed.

LaBrie's lyrics are the best on Distance Over Time tbh. Not because they're so original or anything, but because the other guys didn't write anything of worth. At Wit's End is so dark and relatable, he did a great job there

Gonna have to cave and finally listen to DOT. Been avoiding new Dream Theater the past few records but sounds like it must be done now. Probably still gonna feel like band died when Portnoy left especially, but yeah.

DOT isn't perfect, but it brings back some of the aspects that made them good. One of my most listened albums from this year for sure

I don't get the question. Systematic Chaos is one of their worst albums imo

Ah. I was thinking you were referring to Systematic Chaos for some reason, when you clearly even stated album "this year." Retard level 1000 my bad.
