Five-year anniversary!

Part of me considers it underrated at this point but the mixing is still so pitiful

You know I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m not as into Deftones as y’all, and I think it’s that their music feels insincere to me

*Mark Morrison voice* you’re lyyyyyin’ to me

I think my problems with them have more to do how they’re perceived. When White Pony came out Deftones denounced nu metal, a wise business move that has payed off to this day. As a result they’re often positioned as the one smart and sophisticated nu metal band, especially from music critics. But that’s only in comparison to other nu metal bands. Their sense of sophistication is all aesthetic.

My fav shoegaze, like Hum and Nothing, have an emotional core to them, which I feel that Deftones lack. I’ve read in an 20th Anniversary retrospective for White Pony that the reason it works in comparison to all other nu metal bands is that they lack macho posturing. I don’t really see that, the music is softer but it still feels too guarded to be vulnerable. Honestly I think this band is at its best is when there’s a sleaziness to the music, it contrasts nicely with how pristine the music gets.

Well, you've got a solid argument, which I appreciate.

I've always been of the notion that Deftones mask the vulnerability of their stuff quite well; I'd argue that starting with AtF, there's some real deep emotional stuff in play, but so much of it just sounds like headslamming wham bam music, that on the first few listens its not obvious.

But I guess my standpoint is also dependent upon what triggers emotional responses in me, so I could see how it wouldn't work with everyone.

That's true! I can easily see how people can relate to something that hides its more vulnerable parts rather than exposing it in the open sun. I also didn't know Headup was about Max Cavalera's step-son. That's very touching

That's a good example, because that's arguably the heaviest track on AtF

Despite the fact that KNY is probably my #1 album, I’m happy you’re enjoying this.
