DAMN. is a mixed bag of ideas that aren't fully fleshed out. There are a handful of songs that are decent, but the rest sounds like Kendrick fell headfirst too deep inside his own ass.

DAMN. is so dense I don't know how you'd actually flesh any of it out without slapping more instruments on it.

I think DAMN. is what would have been the logical continuation of GKMC if he wasn't more ambitious and wanted to ride off the success he had with Backseat Freestyle and Swimming Pools. Literally an album filled with bangers and heated/energetic flow. This may be his most basic album as an MC tho. Nothing particularly standing out in terms of story telling or complicated rhymes

Now that I think of it... this entire album kinda seems to be his Golden Age of Grotesque, if you can understand that Marilyn Manson reference. Like Grotesque was satirizing pop culture/music by being an excessive, exaggerated culmination of those things (bordering on lacking self-awareness), DAMN. is an entire album filled with Backseat Freestyles but like the song Yah and Humble, it's done so with an underlying motive to satirize the modern trends of hip hop. Again, I'll have to read into the lyrics of the songs to see how correct my interpretation is but that's how I'm viewing it

Grotesque is also viewed as Manson's poppiest album and considered to be the start of his spiral downward in terms of being entertaining and such

' it's done so with an underlying motive to satirize the modern trends of hip hop'

but it literally reads like everything else he's written with less sophisticated production lmao.

the only other song he's written with similar lyrics and tone as Humble and the like outside of DAMN. is Backseat Freestyle lmao.

im talking about literally every song except HUMBLE, that humble song feels out of place in the context of whatever else this album is trying to achieve. in fact, this shit is way too scatterbrained and you've convinced me its prolly a 2.5 or a 3.0.
