I don't agree that MJK needed more presence on the album. He's there when he needs to be there. I think the main problem is that we know he recorded his vocals after the compositions were made. Dude needs to let his winery run autonomously so he can focus. There's a magazine article where they say he was multitasking recording his vocals at his own studio while also working at his winery. I think that shows.

"If I am completely honest, after 5 or 6 listens through, I just don't have an interest to go back to the record right now. I want to listen to it because it's new Tool but nothing captivates me and really pushes me to go back. Which is very depressing for me because I was incredibly hyped for this album. Was refreshing the tool reddit for news every day for the last month."
I think it's because most of the songs hit you immediately, generally that's a good and a bad thing, the latter because the lasting value diminishes quickly. I'm not quite there yet, but I can see how multiple listens at once can definitely be strenuous with this album. Give it a breather and return once you feel like listening to some more, don't overdo it just because it's a new Tool record lol.

I think it's the greatest thing human beings have ever created.
I'm not being sarcastic. This album recreated the feeling of every different kind of high in life I've ever felt, along with consolation for the lows.
I don't know, this album possessed me immediately. I don't cry often, nor do I even tear up often. I was fucking sobbing and melting by the end of this first listen.

They could have shaved a couple of mins from most tracks but there's usually something interesting happening even during the low points, be it the drumming or a bass/guitar riff.
It feels weird that almost every track hit from the first 2-3 spins. Doesn't necessarily mean it won't have replay value but there's usually a couple of tracks in tool albums that take a while to digest.
That said, 7empest, Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are all damn good, Culling Voices is fine, t/t bores me and makes me want to spin reflection instead. No comment on that chip track yet.

Maynard was complaining last year or the year before that every time he tried to work out vocals the band would change everything and start over, hence the focus on the winery. I worry he’s just old and losing his vocal power though. I haven’t heard the album but I heard the single and Eat the Elephant and he was weak on both.
Even if he’s mediocre, I’ll probably still like the album, but it would hold it back from being great. Hoping he delivers better than the title track on the rest.

I think you negative nancies are too attached to aenima/lat. FI is phenomenal from beginning to end. I love lat and all, but it’s closure is underwhelming. 7empest is a very close second for best closure track from tools discography. Pneuma, invincible and descending..fucks sake. If you think MJK sucks on this record ur retarded. Why does he need to sing everywhere, it was tiresome on 10k at points.

Anemia is one of the best records of all time so it makes sense to compare to that as a standard. Also you naturally are going to attract skepticism after a 13 year break

The single really could have used a younger Maynard to put it over the top. I’m not going to listen to the album until the full thing drops on the 30th though

Yah I'm halfway through it, but I'm not really getting the Maynard complaints yet. I think it lines up pretty well for the songs. So far, it's more consistent than 10,000 days, but hasn't had any moments that made me lose my shit like in Jambi or anything like that. Much more chill.
Will know where it ranks when the album finishes/when I jam it a couple more times.
