The songwriting is spectacular. Just wish Maynard would let loose at points like Scoot mentioned.
Real talk, Pnuema is a vintage sounding Tool song.

it's a solid 4 for sure
A mere 4 for this album would be extremely disappointing, but I suspect I’ll like it more as Tool are top 3 all time for me.

Here's my hot take: I don't think that, generally speaking, Tool is a band that can keep a song interesting past the 10-minute mark, And Fear Inoculum has a whole lotta songs that stretch past the 10-minute mark.

Yeah but I mean it's also kind of wrong when you stop to think how fucking amazing songs like Third Eye, 10,000 Days title track, Reflection and other are.

Third Eye is really great yeah, it would also be better if it was shorter.

It's a 4.5 at first listen. It's better than 10.000 Days and Undertow for sure. Jambi is one of my favorites songs by them, and the songs are more in that style with some vintage Lateralus thrown in.
Will not listen again until I hear the digital version with the interludes.

Not to mention 7empest which I haven’t heard yet, but everyone is saying it’s one of their absolute best songs.
I don’t think Kompys really thought his hot “take” all the way through.

Ehhh, that is extremely inaccurate sir.

7empest is also great, and probably my favorite track after my first listen. I said as a general rule. Meaning, one or *maaaaybe* two 10+ minute odysseys per album is manageable, if one track overstays its welcome by a few minutes, that won't really affect my enjoyment too much. when EVERY song is that long then it gets a smidge tedious.

Didn't even feel the 79 min run, tbh. The songwriting is stellar.

I burned through FI 3 or 4 times today, and I'm liking it more with each listen. It's not perfect like Aenima and Lateralus, but it slightly exceeded my expectations. I expected 10,000 Days pt. II, but instead I got something that stands on it's own and might be their proggiest work to date. I think a case could be made for FI being their best album from a technical standpoint. Danny and Adam go off on this.
Most of my criticisms have already been pointed out by others. A bit of rearranging and a couple of minutes could be shaved off each track. Maynard held back, which is disappointing, but expected given his change in demeanor with age. Still, it would have been great to hear him belt out the "don't you dare point that at me" line in Culling Voices, or "a tempest must be just that" in 7empest, in order to match the musical buildup. I also didn't hear many memorable basslines from Justin on my initial listens--at least nothing that stuck out like 46 & 2 or the Schism intro.
A solid 4 for me, with the potential to grow. My early standout is 7empest, which kicks in like an Undertow song, and then transforms into something of a Rosetta Stoned/Third Eye hybrid.

Why is it 7empest and not Tempest — because Deftones beat them to that title? Lol.
Just don’t really get that. Is it supposed to be pronounced Sevenempest? What the fuck does it MEAN, man?? Why, why?!?

Seeing too many “a solid 4s”. Not a 5, or at the very least a 4.5?
