Great album and another of theirs that I am considering bumping my rating of. Not the biggest fan of the closer here though.

Hex is one of my fave moments here! But agreed, great album.

Seeing Hex Omega live changed my perspective on this song a lot tbh. It's a real journey, and the grandiose finish is dope.

Def my least favorite of their pre-Heritage days, but still better than anything post Heritage imo

Revisiting now and I forgot how hard Heir Apparent goes
Just noticed I only gave this a 3. I really never gave this the chance it deserved, and am going to spend some time with it today.

Speaking of which, I came across this the other day actually

wow, this album is so much better than I remember it being, I have no idea what I was thinking and I've been a diehard Opeth fan since the late 90's. huh.

Record got shit on because it was the cleanest record with the most prominent clean vocals at that time and folks were already resentful of BWP and GR for broadening their fanbase. In actuality, this record is one of, if not the, most consistent in their discog.

i'll complain about porcelain heart being underwhelming but other than that it's aces all the way down, much more consistent than Ghost Reveries with those couple unnecessary prog songs, even though I also adore that one as well.

GR is personally my fave, but Watershed, MAYH and Still Life round out the top four.

BWP is 5 or 6 for me. t/t and Drapery are great, but I am not as hot on Bleak and Harvest as most seem to be.

^ I love Bleak, but I actually do agree on Harvest. Easily my least favorite song of the album
Meanwhile, Dirge for November needs way more love

Bleak was nowhere near the top for me for the first few years, it basically had no impact on me at all
Now it's near the top, but Drapery Falls, t/t and Leper Affinity are top for me

My issue with Bleak is that there are several other songs by Opeth with the same structure that appeal to me more.

I get that, but for some reason the atmosphere on that song is thicker than some of the other similar tracks, plus it gets stuck in my head way more these days
Fuck it, it might be top 3, kick out Leper Affinity

I can't put it above When, which has almost the same structure, but is more dynamic and melodically interesting and has one of their all timer outros.
