Dark Side would likely be at 5. The only thing preventing me from thinking it's perfect is the massive blue balls the transition from Us and Them and Any Colour You Like gives me

Some albums need the sheer volume, because some albums are about albums and not about songs. And big volume = a statement, even if it doesn't make sense song-wise. For example, The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs is 3 CDs of mostly decent but not mind-blowing love songs that could have been a wonderful single CD. But there is something artistic, something alluring about its size alone. I mean, releasing 15 or 20 love songs on 1CD? Anyone can do that. But to put out 3 CDs just to be able to name your album 69 Love Songs, trade cohesion for concept, just to be able to say "love - I covered it all" - that's madness. But also, it's a fucking statement. It's huge. Sometimes the idea alone is exciting, and if the songs are actually good - that's a nice bonus.

(That being said, The Wall is pretty damn overrated.)

i mean, I can KINDA see what alt is trying to say? but I dont think the "scope" of a project's ambition should ever take centerstage over if what is being presented is good or not.

edit: though I guess that makes me kind of a hypocrite considering some of the albums ive given high ratings before.

I was going to say Altertide hit the nail on the coffin but then I read that last sentence (jk you do make a splendid hypothetical argument in favor of The Wall)

And wtf people dislike Welcome to the Machine? It's easily one of the best songs by the band

Thanks. the last statement was just so that people don't falsely accuse me of liking The Wall (lol), but what came before was absolutely meant as an argument against those who need to trim it down.

also yeah i don't know where you've heard people don't like "welcome to the machine". it was widely acclaimed last time I checked

well, those two songs are considered all time classic tracks... so a good chance is that most people who talk about those tracks simply havent heard the others.

The only PF songs I hear on the classic rock radio station where I live only play Welcome to the Machine and Young Lust (and occasionally Comfortably Numb and Money).

In an incredibly rare instance, the station once played Dogs in all its glorious entirety

I've never said I didn't like Welcome to the Machine, I just think is my least favorite track from what I consider to be my favorite album of all time. So it has to be pretty good. What I'm trying to say is that if I had to rank WYWH songs, the result would be something like this:

1) Shine On You Crazy Diamond (6/5)

2) Have a Cigar (5/5)

3) Wish You Were Here (4.5/5)

4) Welcome to the Machine (4.5/5)

I've heard numerous Floyd songs on the radio tbh

"Time," "Money," "Welcome to the Machine," "Have a Cigar," "Wish You Were Here," "Dogs," "Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. II," "Mother," "Hey You," "Young Lust," "Comfortably Numb," "Run like Hell," "Louder than Words," probably others too

The radio station around me abuses Floyd, I've heard every song from Dark Side and Wish You Were Here on there at least once except for Any Colour You Like

Ooh Run Like Hell is also a regular on the classic rock station too ha. Well shit I'd rather listen to a station that abuses PF (which frankly sounds like amazing) than a station that abuses AC/DC (I have nothing against the band, it's just that I only dig their material from the Back in Black album)
