I used to be a teacher.
There was this one little black kid who sucked at dancing but he would always win the talent shows, basically because people felt bad for him and were trying to demonstrate they were not “racists” by voting for him.
Get the same vibes from people giving this a 5. They don’t actually think this is a classic, they’ve just lowered their bar because the bigotry of low expectations has forced them to regard hip hop as an inferior genre — one where even an album with elementary, childish, mundane lyrics can be considered a “classic” just so long as it has enough poppy beats and production to keep their attention. 99% of people who have this as a 5 “don’t really listen to hip hop much, but liked this!” etc

I kind of agree. also a lot of kendrick's stuff has too much political commentary to listen to casually. no doubt the guy is insanely talented, but I just feel like I'm listening to poems with music over them sometimes.

this is the best one, but I don't at all mind someone putting on any of the middle three. kendrick can be lame with that "POWER...PAIN...PRIDE...JOY...its all inside me" type stuff but he's obviously worth it as an artist lol, can handle some collateral damage from his expressive ambitions
