Huge chunks of the new album just sound like Tool reassembling their already spare and repetitive discography into a product so familiar it's nauseating. Like, I feel like I hear something from Rosetta Stoned at some point in almost every song

t/t is one of the weaker ones. still solid.

second track Pneuma is just so good. can fit right onto lateralus

invincible and descending are both great. I give the edge to descending

culling voices is a softer track which I haven't really jived with yet.

the second last track is like a NIN infused crazy electronic whack ass space shit instrumental. it's pretty awesome

the last song is a monster. some good heavy shit and it sounds pretty fleshed out

noice. Track 2 & 7 being the best seems to be the common sentiment so far. I'm very curious about the instrumental, that's either going to be genius or filler. I'm imagining Triad with synths or something.

Fi is a solid track but nothing remarkable

Pneuma is okay but I generally do not understand the hype, there is some filler and there's not much of a climax or anything significant happening after the initial groove

invincible and descending are both great yeah, invincible sounds massive and descending too (although I have some issues with the sound of the guitar in descending, hoping it's the rip quality)

Culling voices is very solid and actually feels like a track with a very focused direction (something a few songs here I believe lack), however my only pet peeve is that Maynard doesn't let a scream out during that ending, the song is just begging for it.

7empest is a very big song and it's pretty fantastic instrumentally. I dig Adam's and Danny's work on it a whole lot, but biggest letdown is Maynard. His lyrics are actually kind of cringe-inducing on this track and his delivery just doesn't feel like the angry Maynard back in the day, it feels a little phoned in on this track in particular, aggressive for the sake of being aggressive.



Overall, I'm still yet to form a final opinion on the album, but it will be a while. It's only been out for about a day. All I can say is level your expectations so that you don't end up being underwhelmed and you will be good.

I'm in the minority with not being in love with it so take it with a grain of salt. As of right now, I think it's a fine song but could have been better. It might change you never know.
