When did this become my fave Natty album? The sneakiest of sneaky growers. It was actually beyond my comprehension that anyone had this as their peak. Now I’m there, I think.
I heard a lot of subtle details in the instrumentation this time around, some of which I knew existed from the beginning, but the importance of these artistic flourishes has magnified significantly in more recent times.
Not sure I’ve ever heard this with my most recent pair of headphones actually, got to say they were probably worth buying just for this album.

This IS definitely their peak. Their darkest release has a lot of their best songs and it is a 10/5 all through without a single weak song. Funny enough 2 of the songs most people usually cite as some of their worst in their discography (Little Faith, Afraid of Everyone) are in my top 5 National songs list.

I love both of the songs (now). I feel Lemonworld is marginally over-appreciated and Runaway is the dark horse that no-one seems to place in the upper-echelons of Natty’s discog. At this point it’s like arguing semantics because this album is so ludicrously consistent, I’ll probably just award it ‘best indie album ever‘ and be done with it.

People hate on Little Faith??? It's probably the best song the band has ever done

Edit I didn't look at the album I thought this was Trouble will find me. Comment redacted.

Afraid of Everyone is peak. Little Faith is on the weaker side of HIGH VIOLET imo, but is far from one of the weakest tracks they’ve done. That’s a pretty miserable take, tbh.

| |
Weakest song is Vanderlyle by a decent margin tbh, everything else carries its weight (although I'd never jam Runaway outside of sequencing)

Having a least favorite song here at all is a hot take :-P

England is one of the best here and would have been a perfect closer. Opening minute or so is peak National
|
| |
Least fave is probably Anyone’s Ghost, honestly. Or Runaway. But I fuck with them both so 🤷🏼♂️
