i should do a floyd deep dive. its been a long time since i listened to their discog but i do remember liking The Wall most because it felt the most visionary. i like when music transcends sound and becomes a world of its own and i don't remember this doing that for me at all
i also remember rly liking Animals

Animals is their peak. No question. Lyrically and musically. WYWH gets really tiresome when the whole album is a Syd Barrett tribute album and The Wall is too easy to listen to, because the songs are cut in a convinient way so that the casual listener can listen to it.

My ranking of their heyday from best to worst would be:
WYWH
Animals
The Wall
Meddle
This
But tbh, they're all fantastic so it doesn't matter much

rod glad to hear ur also not too big on WYWH. i rly dont get that one so much. like yeah its good but its like. just good
guess it comes down to what u value in music? floyd albums are so universal so the ones that speak to u are the ones that hit closest to home thematically as well as musically. like im not too big on the wall musically (it's overblown there) but. thematically? in terms of its vision? fucking home run
animals is so great because it's very much a masterpiece of both of those things (themes and music). imo thats why it's the best

heyday ranking:
WYWH
Animals
Meddle
Dark Side
The Wall
WYWH, to me, is their emotive peak. Meddle had all manner of gorgeous sounds, The Wall was thematically brilliant, Dark Side was groundbreaking, and Animals was a flawlessly executed statement, but none of them contain as many moments that give me shivers like the WYWH does. Gilmour's guitar is so versatile and absolutely phenomenal at evoking so much with so little (the guitar lines on t/t, his solo on Have A Cigar, the FUCKING solo bits on Shine On You). every choral peak on it reminds me of how much i love Pink Floyd. that album was life-changing and transformative in my musical experience - it's obviously early to call, but i think it will always be my favorite
