first time i ever saw them they opened with it. very cool even though I wasn’t familiar with it at the time.

Okay this is pretty underrated too.

The fact that Dusk is rated higher than this and WFCC is disgraceful to me.

Yeah I just don’t agree with any of that. The only thing this has on Dusk is a much better “ballad”. Grim Heart clears The Dusk in Us by a mile. Everything else goes to Dusk imo, better lyrics, better vocals in general, way more variety, better production too tbh

dusk is definitely a good album, but it's by far their most stock sounding to me. has a lack of distinctness that all of their others have to me.

i'd love to see a redux of this because it really needs it and would really highlight the best parts of it.

I feel like Dusk has a distinct identity, leaning in a noise rock direction more than anything else they have done. It's also their most varied in terms of style. I think that's both a strength and a weakness - it sort of teeters on the edge between being dynamic and being all over the place.

I can see that, I mean just look at the stretch of tracks in the middle of the record. The Dusk in Us is the big post rockish centerpiece, Wildlife is some chaotic riffage with what may be the catchiest hook Jacob has ever wrote, that “cruel, cruel world” bit worms its way into my brain every time, to Murk & Marrow, which doesn’t sound like anything the band has ever done, like I don’t even know how to describe it, then on Trigger you get the noise rock stuff with that ridiculously groovy bassline, then back to back straight up barnburners with Broken By Light and Cannibals.

Idk, I get not being in love with it, but I don’t really see how any of that is “stock” tbh

yep, also add the two new ones here. it's all good music, but the guys just kinda lost their edge after AWLWLB

None of their albums are bad my nay means but the most recent two are them back at the top of their game, no doubt.

Ya big dog everyone’s entitled to their opinion but idk how anyone can hear tracks like Slip the Noose and It Only Gets Worse and think they lost their edge

ehh maybe I didn't express myself correctly. sure, they still get fast and heavy, but to me it lacks the pure unhinged energy and emotion of their 2000s era. also the riffs got more "basic", or stock, at least for their standards

No I get what you’re saying, I just really disagree. But then again I don’t really think the band has sounded particularly “unhinged”, at least compared to where they started, since Jane Doe. Their songwriting really tightened up with You Fail Me and that’s when Jacob adopted the more guttural vocal style that he has now.

I just don’t really understand not hearing the same level of emotion or passion or whatever in Hum of Hurt, Jacob sounds absolutely desperate on parts of that record and Nate is pretty savage on it too. I think that statement would hold more water if they only dropped Love is Not Enough this year… that record really feels like a “back to basics” moment for them, where, imo ofc, Hum of Hurt is far noisier and more chaotic.

incredibly consistent band for sure. the plagues through trophy scars run on this one is top shelf.

Never been that keen on this one. And yeah Dusk is fs a better album than this, despite having some weak spots.
