--Hmm. Fair enough ig. Tbh that's a criticism I have of a lot of "purely heavy" stuff--

Absolutely. I think it's easier for me to gloss over repetition when it comes from a metal or punk band. I don't know why, but it seems to be the case.

Repetition is helpful in certain circumstances, especially when you’re looking for a consistent sound or vibe. Sometimes I’m in the mood for a specific style and excess variation or ‘tangents’ are unwelcome. Of course there are those special artists who can pack in a decent amount of variation, whilst also achieving such cohesion.

Struggling with the vocals so far on this. Production is also very synthetic.

Willie's criticisms of this record are a nice little summary of my main issues with this album. This band try really hard to bring in variety with the switches between the softer indie/R&B sections and the heavier sections, but they just end up making that their MO and the songwriting and general flow of the album really suffers because of that, especially in the second half of the album. They do have the potential of doing something great I feel but they need to work on their songwriting chops for that to happen.

It's also way too fucking long, this did not need to be over an hour long, cut out like 3 of the weakest tracks on here and it'd be much less of a drag.

Idk if I'd consider these tracks specifically repetitious as much as poorly written. Agree with most of cloakanddagger's take, homogenous writing and zero sense for the dramatic flair that these stylistic decisions really demand is most of what kills it (excluding vocals/lyrics ofc)

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Sleep Token. The music is extremely progressive, and without a solid grasp of advanced music theory most of the songs will go over a typical listener's head. There's also the band's lore, which is deftly woven into their characterization, while their mythology draws heavily from H.P. Lovecraft's stories, for instance. The fans understand this stuff. They have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they're not just good, they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence, people who dislike Sleep Token truly ARE idiots. Of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the effortless agility with which the band seamlessly fuses Prog, Metal, Pop, Funk, and Hip-Hop, or how Vessel's vocal range puts even the most acclaimed opera singers to shame. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Vessel's genius lyrical storytelling unfolds itself into their ears. What fools, how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, I DO have a Sleep Token tattoo. And no, you can't see it. It's for the worshippers' eyes only, and even then they have to demonstrate their unwavering devotion to the ancient deity Sleep beforehand. Nothing personal, kid.

Rain was so close to being a good song, and then we get that refrain.

Any artist dead set on repeating a lyric better be damned sure it's air-tight poetry or can take on different meanings upon repetition.

I cringe so hard when someone writes a dead-simple, generic line like that and then just keeps repeating it, insisting it has meaning. I get secondhand embarrassment for them, as an artist.

Man, it is wild how flat and boring this whole thing is. Ratings are all over the place so I can't discount that I'm "missing something" here.

Listened to this front to back and promptly forgot it all. Very samey.
