I've come back to this a lot after listening through Last Song Standing on the Dissect podcast feed.

^and to add to that, I've been listening to it as the spiritual follow-up to TPAB, which has been fascinating

I can't fully articulate why I think they pair well yet. Both albums wrestle with how fame has influenced who Kendrick is as an artist and a person, and the connections/ties to Compton and all it represents. I'm definitely not the first person to notice this, but recently when I heard "Yeah, Tupac dead, gotta think for yourself" from Savior, I heard it as directly relevant to the end of Mortal Man. In some ways, this album feels like a corrective to parts of TPAB where he positioned himself as some kind of savior of his community (even if he was honest on TPAB about the burden that was for him).

they feel distinct to me in that TPAB is more of a general political/cultural statement and this feels like Kendrick directly narrating his own life. if anything it feels like more of a follow up to GKMC thematically

Yeah, true. But I'd argue TPAB has many more personal themes than we all realized when it was first released. I mean, "u" for example. So much of the political/cultural commentary is interpreted through Kendrick's own journey.

for sure. it just feels like on TPAB he was using his personal experiences to paint a larger narrative about society. on this one he's just giving a glimpse into his own life with no other real motive behind it

Damn wasn’t bad but this is better. Best tracks off Section 80 wreck this though.

It’s lower tier Kendrick for sure, but I’ve gained appreciation for it since May.
