I’ve had the reverse experience where this album has given me the patience to listen to the new Beach House all the way through and appreciate its intricacies. It’s almost like I have a new skill!

New beach house is super good, but this takes the trophy

I’ll concede the new BH is super competent in what it’s going for - for me only a ‘good’ album though, just too familiar and obvious with its influences
Nothing really surprised me on it

I definitely preferred where ‘7’ went

"They sound like the Chromatics at this point, it’s glossy and a bit…big n’ bland."
woke up with this thought in my head and it is 65% accurate
wow what say

Change is awesome, in contention for my favorite Big Thief song at this point, the lyrics are fairly simple but they hit hard

Yes. It’s a perfect opener in that sense.

Only heard that new Beach House album once but was thoroughly bored. Double albums don't suit them and they their ideas sounded rly uninspired to me. No longer are they writing gorgeous melodies and infectious hooks, it's just all bland overly ambient stuff. Maybe I'll come around to it though. I did enjoy the closer

new BH is still head and shoulders better than anything pre-DC and I think a lot of the arrangements/layerings in the first chunk of the alb are quite inspired (along with the closer) but otherwise mmmyeah agreed

there’s hardly enough material on OTM to justify 40 mins let alone 85!!
|
| |
yeh there's about 35 mins of rly good stuff, but i always feel like both good and bad BH songs seem to last forever so the actual runtime is maybe immaterial
unlike the point halfway thru chapter 2 where they run out of ideas, which v much is

no love for the opener?

If this was just all 8 singles it'd be a viable album like a minute shorter than Masterpiece, and a maybe-5

There are a few other songs I’d add to round that out (title track, Flower of Blood, The Only Place) but you’re not wrong there. The rest of the material still rounds off to 4/5 quality though so it’s far from filler. And even the trimmed version of this would’ve been a bit all over the place stylistically so I really don’t mind their making this into a “throw everything at the wall” type album. It’s a glorious mess, more than the sum of its parts.

Yeah, there's def others here that are good, just still feel like at least 4 out of my top 5 on here were singles, and even if there aren't any outright bad songs, so many things, particularly in the back half, tread the same ground that at least another song already did and the returns are diminishing with the pile up.
Not accustomed to 3.5'ing things to avg out the 4.5 and 2.5 impulses

Like Simulation Swarm deserves better than to be sandwiched b/w 12,000 Lines and Love Love Love
