True, I actually like how this community shits on each other. Probs why I haven't left yet. Guess I just detest the whole 'well if other people like this song, it must be good huehuehue' argument

The guy who goes on a bunch of Meshuggah threads and tells people they're wrong because something is "universally considered _______" (good, bad, etc.)

In Waves is better produced than this for sure. But the album is such a weird collection of sounds. Goes from their heaviest stuff like Dusk Dismantled to radio songs like Built to Fall and it's not seamless at all. Also it was overall such a departure from Shogun which is almost universally their most loved album.
Might as well rank the albums at this point why not. I have not listened to enough of Ember to Inferno so I will leave it out. It's maybe a bit hot take-ish so have fun.
1. Shogun
2. Sin and the Sentence
3. In the Court of the Dragon
4. What the Dead Men Say
5. Ascendancy
6. Crusade
7. In Waves
8. Silence In the Snow
9. Vengeance Falls

Idk, it might just be me; as I said before, I didn't grow up with these guys so I probably don't have as much personal connection to earlier albums like Ascendancy. I think 2017 is when I finally started exploring their music, so I could be a bit biased toward the last few albums because of that

I just feel this album is shockingly stagnant for how highly regarded it is honestly. Or maybe I just don't like the super D&D fantasy lyrical content.

I think it's as simple as this being Shogun II and it's what people want. The Phalanx was even written during the Shogun sessions.
I don't think it's quite as special as Shogun was but outside of lackluster production it's pretty freaking close. A Sword Over Democles and Shadow of the Abattoir are top tier Trivium tracks.

Agreed, I'd add Fall Into Your Hands as well.

4. The Sin and the Sentence
5. What the Dead Men Say
