it's a shame these dudes have slipped into playing such a neutered iteration of their trademark sound

Don't mind Spirit they just think of this album as on par with Surrounded by Silence and Brokencyde

This is like the archetypal average album. As predictable as it gets, but it’s hard to call the execution bad except for the clean vocals, which they balance out with a couple of good riffs.

I guess one thing you can’t take away from these guys is they almost always nail the guitar tones for this style of metalcore.

it's not that the execution is bad per se, it's just bad songwriting

and i actually really dislike the guitar tone on this one (and their last) it doesn't have the power of their older material

The power would come from stronger songwriting and tailoring the overall mix to fit it. In isolation these guitar tracks sound have that nice 3D blended 5150/Rectifier type sound that most the good 00s albums of this nature used. Not sure if that’s what they actually used, but the sound is in that ballpark.

sounds fine to me, very 2019 not-too-clean but streamlined core sound
