you don't count tho, your opinions on the national are ass. you think system is one of their best songs and it's the most w/e song ever.

System is top 25 and yeah it has one of the most perfect chorus melodies for Matt
Top 10 is the real stuff:
Slow Show
Sorrow
Lemonworld
Slipped
Brainy
Fake Empire
Humiliation
Blank Slate
About Today
Vanderlyle
Something like that off the top of my head, don’t have my iTunes top 100 to hand right now lol

If you honestly rate Baby top 10 then I think I’m putting your National opinions in the box marked ‘niche’ bro

see, i feel that way about seeing humiliation and brainy in your top 10. they're both great but top 10? eh. sorrow, lemonworld, slipped, and fake empire would make mine tho so i forgive you. mr. november, all the wine, conversation 16, baby we'll be fine, this is the last time, and i should live in salt would probably make up the rest of my top 10

Conversation 16 would be close to the top 10
Brainy is the archetypal genius National song for me. Their most iconic drumming intro if nothing else - but the lyrics are also top tier imo

Exile is top 20
Also maybe Lucky You would be in my top 10 ahead of About Today dunno
A lot of incredible tunes. NONE on this album is just my honest assessment sadly

All national takes months if not years to grow. Except the debut and beast which are both a bit turd no matter what way you look at it.

Nah, I knew if a National album was going to be something special six spins in other than Alli which didn’t get me into the band massively (still, I liked it to a 4/5 degree)
Trouble took a little longer just to make sure it had more to offer than being High Violet mk 2
Boxer, HV and SWB I had a good handle on from first few goes and loved them

Going to have to agree that nothing here comes close to my top 10:
Pink Rabbits
Ada
Lucky You
Bloodbuzz Ohio
Conversation 16
Brainy
The Geese of Beverly Road
Guilty Party
The System Dreams in Total Darkness
Slow Show

Gyro - do you listen to the Tindersticks because Baby sounds like a middle hitter Tindersticks tune to me :/
Just trying it now and it’s missing something for me. I do find Alli a bit of a transition, a half sketched out blueprint for the successes to come and Baby and the song after really give that feeling to me.

I think Where Is Her Head is a top twenty for me just because melodically it's one of Natty's best songs period. But for emotional resonance? Little here does it, gotta be honest, and that's from someone who likes this album.

Give it a fortnight and I might put up a top 100 track selection list with descriptions like I did for Lambchop and Radiohead - this band now JUST have enough material to make it worth doing at this point.

First impressions of this are that it's just very loose melodically compared to their previous stuff. Feels tailor made to play in the background of a J.Crew. The drumming was once one of my favorite aspects and I can't even remember a track that features it well.
I liked Quiet Night and Rylan because they sound the most stylistically similar to their old stuff, but they wouldn't stand out from the pack if included there.

Leaning towards this being a mixed bag, tracks 5-8 are the weakest point. The interludes in general just don’t work. Quiet Light is very good, I like Oblivions, Rylan & Where is Her Head... Kansas is an odd-ball track and now I’ve gotten over the initial shock value it’s settling in as ‘a nice little intrigue’, it’s decent enough and probably in the ‘high mid-range’ here. Light years is alright, as is the opener, a little undecided on Dust Swirls and Roman Holiday.
Nearly formed an opinion on everything but not ready to rate it yet.

I dunno Doof, we definitely disagree on Humiliation, Slipped, and Blank Slate in top 10. That's pretty wild to me.
