Looking back I think it was actually almost time for that movement anyway, most bands of the scene had started to move away and try different ways to explore new sounds - but Slowdive’s leap here was the biggest and bravest of them all. And so unfair that it was so poorly received. Just too much too soon I think, but time has been very kind to this album. Its just grown in stature. Just so glad that Neil was hanging round with and living with the people from Seefeel and going to night clubs playing Aphex Twin and Autechre.

I wasn't 'there for it' and therefore lack the wider context you're referring to, but I think the sign of a great album is one that benefits from retrospect / hindsight and feels more obviously significant over time (than when it was first released). Sometimes circumstances prevent a new direction being well received, particularly 'bold artistic statements' where the would-be audience is caught off-guard.
