I think the 2.5-3's balance out the derpiness of 1's and 5's.

Not horrible, just boring and dumb. Everyone who hates this or loves this too much is a fool wasting time on a perfectly average record.

yeah shaping out to be a 3 but i'm 4 songs in so i'm holding judgement. if it keeps meandering like this tho with these iamverysmart lyrics then that could drop

I like the character of FJM quite a lot, find the lyrics immensely enjoyable. Will probably drop to a 3.5 for me, but this is good.

The fact this album just keeps on going, gritted teeth and clutching that steering wheel, careering well beyond the point of sanity...I mean that's the charm. It's a classic grand folly that actually grows on you because unlike some other egomaniacs he has his talents and a certain knowing douchebag appeal. It's actually a fun album disguised as a mature (ok, boring) one.

so you should understand why people would think it's boring if you yourself said it sounds boring. i'll prob relisten to see if it grows but i don't like FJM enough as a lyricist for the themes themselves to carry the album

its the most antagonistic album in a while, even Kozelek at this stage knows some people dig his new style and he won't piss everyone off with his rambling diary songs

on the surface this isn't too welcoming, intentionally so - but the grand concept and general stupidity of the project warms on you

I mean the haters of this album are a huge part of the appeal of the record, so people saying they dislike this are of course a well known element waving from within the album itself and are definitely part of the concept

Sorta, but I think that's kind of unfair. He's arguing that the hate this gets feeds into the narrative of the album, which makes the narrative itself more appealing. It's not that that's even the main charm -- musically, it's understandable for people to find this interesting -- but that's one of its appeals.

"If this album was titled Jim O'Rourke 'Pure Comedy' there would be no ratings below a 2.5

Snarky lyrics over minimal chamber indie with an inarguably strong voice - sound the trumpets, ready the 1.5's"

If this were anyone else, it would be well below a 3.3. I would see it probably between a 2.3-2.5. It was falling well then Fantano reviewed it. His voice gets terribly tedious after the second track and the sad part is that's all there is after the second track. If you love his voice then that's great but it's perfectly understandable to rate this a 1.5 or below. Personally I can't see anyone rating above a 3 even if you like his voice. If you don't like his voice, my prayers are with you. Better yet, don't even approach it. I like his voice and grew to hate it by the end.
