Bland as a general rule is not enough to make me 1 something. I'd probably give this a 2-2.5 with a different, less emotive singer. On tracks like Drained and Like Sand Anders definitely sounds pained, which goes along with the lyrics.

"2) You don't like Anders' voice, and it's centered around him (fair enough, agree to disagree)
3) You genuinely think the songwriting is 1-worthy regardless of the band that created it. (unlikely)"
It's pretty much these two points and 1 doesn't really apply to me since TJR wasn't that great either.

The songwriting is a 2 at worst imo, and I like Anders enough to give it a 3. But glad you're honest!!

Anders' voice is utterly abhorrent on this.

It's not his best work, but I definitely don't think he sounds bad at all.

I've always had a soft spot for his emotive delivery. No way this is terrible vocal work but say, The Chosen Pessimist, isn't.

Sure, I won't deny his shortcomings, but at least in studio he sounds fine to me. And what alex said but unironically
