I think nostalgia is a bit too strong on that one.

Trey you underrated 3.7 fear factory excellent return to roots and excellent album (genexus) and you give this half-ass thing 3.8. I don't understand. Sure, one shouldn't haughtily disavow what he used to like when he was a teeny but you can be very happy and admit that it's not that good in itself.

I don't understand the hype for Black is the Soul. The vocals on the chorus are horrible. I mean, yeah, they went for something epic and it nearly works but it doesn't work for me really. Jonathan's vocals are just so inappropriate. It needed a melody, something grand, and he just sticks to something horribly monotonous. Plus the rythm that makes the song stand out remain from the beginning to the end. It's boring.

I'm very curious to see what they'll do next. If they stick to this "back to the roots" approch or if it was just for one time and next album will be Paradigm shift II.

I don't know if nostalgia has anything to do with the praise this album is getting.. well atleast from my perspective, because even The Paradigm Shift was "back to the roots" album it just wasn't a very strong album.. so far I don't hate any chorus in the new one like I have some on songs from TPS like "Punishment Time" - which is pretty interesting song, but that chorus just kills it.. the chorus maybe would be good if he would be used in a another song, but there it doesn't work at all

+ TPS has some songs I really, really don't like, like for example "Spike In My Veins" and in general that album isn't heavy enough for me

And Take A Look In The Mirror was the first album to get back to the roots album, but still wasn't as good received like SOS.. in fact many fans were really disappointed by that album and the same is true for Korn III Remember Who You Are.. so that's why I can't see nostalgia being a big factor in the good ratings this new album has..

Anyway, right now my favorite tracks from SOS are : The Hating (one of best tracks in Korn's discography ever), Everything Falls Apart, When You're Not There, Next In Line + both bonus tracks

Worst tracks right now: Take Me, Please Come For Me..still ok, but nothing special compared to the rest of the album

Ah come on, The Serenity of Suffering is the sole proper return to roots album the band has ever done. Remember Who You Are and Take a Look in the Mirror didn't recapture the atmosphere of the first albums of the band. The serenity of suffering is the first album to do that.

And The Paradigm Shift is really not a return to roots. Head was back alright, but they did exactly the opposite of looking back. They tried to go forward and got slapped in the face, as usual. So now, they're licking their fans ass for one album and then they'll try to do something relevant again.

Remember who you Are was intended to be a return to roots in every way; they got Ross Robinson, tried to force themselves to write like they did on the first album, got Jonathan in a bad place to try and recapture the intensity of the debut - hell even the album name and cover is so over the top return to roots. The difference here is that the band are actually enjoying themselves and writing naturally.

^yeah that too. He's probably the reason they're enjoying themselves more and being relaxed about it.

I got a surprise when I first listened to this, wasn't expecting anything good from it (I didn't followed it) But after a few spins I have to say I feel like its a solid one, I have to admit that there's some nostalgia for my part but it's a nice one anyways.

I wouldn't really say Paradigm Shift was back to the their roots - it still had the electronics and the vibe didn't remind me of any of the aggressive, dark, emo-ish/nu-metal from the 90s at all.

This does.

Paradigm Shift had better melodies, especially chorus-wise.

This is better instrumentally and has some nice verses, but not much else. Lyrics are bad.
