The last place I expected to receive any praise was this thread. Does this mean I should jam Beyonce now?
@Asd that's your judgement to make but it was completely accidental on my part.

we kinda diverted from the topic but i was bowling so w/e:
I guess this change in how people are viewing pop music was a long time coming, though. I wanna say it was people like Lorde and Beyonce in 2013 who started the shift toward viewing pop music as more of an artform or a social awareness platform. Lorde especially seemed to catch a lot of attention for how real and "pure" she was as a musician since she tried to subvert the genre cliches and had an interesting style at the time.
This was also during a time where I think pop music was at some weird catalyst of super heavy, dirty, and "brainless" in a clusterfuck of the cool house/dubstep trend at the time and with the post-MJ world (as i call it) recovery was still in progress. So somewhere around 2009-2012 where it seemed like pop music was at a major low. Then with these smart, sexy, and sophisticated albums deconstructing the platform people started to grow an appreciation for "real music" but when other artists wanted to enter in by just doing pop as pop was, then a really weird and kind of disgusting hard-on for "true" artists formed under the pretense of social issues.
This is probably a random ramble (and prolly inaccurate) but it is really interesting how the genre started as a simple going fetishization outlet and has come back around to that same kind of style but in a completely new, progressive light. Im interested how certain artists will behave and grow in this new outlet because there seems to be a demand for artists standing up for issues and supporting said problems (like when Swift was attacked for not helping Kesha or something stupid like that). Right now i'm keeping an eye on Meghan Trainor because she seems to be trying to develop a "diva" persona with her newest album and it will be interesting to see how people react. Especially with a single like NO.

Her first album is pretty disgusting middle age mom shoop bop 50s throwback rap garbage and should be avoided except for like... 2 tracks?
This new album is more heavy in "out there" electronic elements and has more of a like i said, diva personality in development. I've actually enjoyed most of the new singles even though theyre getting some hate (NO especially). Like I said, im interested in how reaction will be because she seems like an artist who is quite literally engineering a personality similar to how it was in the 80s and 90s and its being applied to the more modern, experimental sound of pop music. YOu arent really seeing that anymore with how things are working now.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoys "NO".This new album of hers is definitely going to better than her first. Though that isn't really too big of a compliment, as Title was god awful.

its a pretty groovy song and the cries of insecure males who think the song is smoldering their chances to pick up chicks ( one of the reviews for it on RYM says exactly that) is entertaining as hell because this song is in no way possibly offensive like All About That Bass or Marvin Gaye was.

Though for realsies his song with Selena Gomez, We Don't Talk Anymore, is pretty great. Which says a lot because its two of the most uninteresting vocalists in pop music making a really good song.

Hands to Myself is decent, the production is pretty nice, but the rest of her singles really haven't stood out for me. Out of all these ex-Disney stars, Demi Lovato definitely has the best single out of all of them with "Cool for the Summer".

Eh, I think Todd in the Shadows puts it best: "Selena Gomez seems to be a pop star for the same reason Jeb Bush is running for president. 'Eh, what else am I gonna do?'"
