can we at least agree on Simple Death being probably the most underrated track on any of her LPs (depending on how the consensus on Eyes Like Nightshade squares up)

darkwave singer/songwriter queen losing a steep proportion of her edge to try-hard industrial clatter and lazy songwriting

Survive's verses are pure clunk and the song's entire progression sounds like it was purpose-crafted for a Kill Bill-worshipping C-movie opening title, Color of Blood is probably the most forgivable of the three but still very ham-fisted in its development, and we don't even talk about the t/t. Simple Death leans the least on shock value out of anything here, just a solid af singer/songwriter track with a patient development and a really beautiful resolution. Definitely went under my radar when I heard this the first few times, but has had by far the longest shelf life
also tbh the tone of this album demands a couple of lacunae like that - Maw does a great job for the first half, but Crazy Love is flim by comparison and misses the mark. Simple Love definitely suffers from following it directly in sequence, but it fleshes out that downtime perfectly and the tracklist wouldn't function as well as it, uh, should do on paper without it

Simple Death was definitely a standout this time around, i preferred Crazy Love before but that seems a bit silly in retrospect

Yeah I just never really cared for either. But the rest of the tracks on this record are strong enough for me look past that. Crazy Love feels like an obligatory acoustic track and does not really fit the vibe of the record imo. Simple Death at least feels like it belongs I guess
Honestly as far as acoustic songs go, I really prefer Hypnos and Flame both over Crazy Love, pretty sure those were on the deluxe version of this?

This album is quite good. Trying to go through her whole discography and this is the only one I've thoroughly enjoyed so far

Survive's progression instatly clicked with me, quite similarly to what I feel when jamming Reins from PiB. And yes, I love Kill Bill-worshipping C-movie opening titles.
Johnny, you seem to insist on evaluating these tracks through the lens of Chelsea's former singer/songwriter output, and they *may* sound weaker in their stripped-down bedroom versions than those on Apokalypsis or Unknown Rooms. The thing is that I don't know, because I didn't hear those versions. To me, the key is how the monumental instrumentation of this LP transforms its songs to something else. If you will, goth flatulence elevates them to another level. And I wouldn't want to ask for more.
