He does use it as "part of the act" like you said, and on this album it's kind of charming in a "I think I'm better than you and I realize it" kind of way. It's a tough balance to strike, especially two albums in a row

The problem with Pure Comedy is he upholds this "i'm tired of acting like this" act for 75 minutes and it loses steam a third into the album. Too many of the songs are far too self-indulgent and poorly written. Any sincerity that you'd hear here is not present and it just feels like he doesn't care anymore.
