My huge dakrthrone binge is still ongoing, moved onto this today and it sounds even more grim and evil considering ive spent the last 3 days listening to nothing but dm era darkthrone

sounds like a good way to spend 3 days of your life

This riffs on this are so good but don't care for the vocals a lot of the time, feel like they don't really match the instruments at times or don't bring them up to their full energy and potential.

Is this a good starting place for black metal?
|

this wasn't that immediate for me so idk
|
| |
Idk. What do you mean like subgenres? I enjoy post, sludge, and death.
|
| |
yea it's a grower eh?
most people start with something like Bergtatt but that might give you the wrong impression ahaha
|
| |
if you're a dm guy then this album might do it for you. try Blood Fire Death too.
Dissection might be good as well though I don't personally dig them
|
| |
As well as thrash. I pretty much am familiar with and enjoy every subgenre but black so far. I mean, I know some modern metal bands that have roots in black metal, but I haven't checked any of the trve
|
| |
yeah actually k let me restart
|
| |
if you want something ridiculously kvlt and kind of retarted try Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. vocals are unusual and may be a turnoff.
if you want something more dm-y, try Dissection - The Somberlain
if you want something thrashy try Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter
if you want something super accessible go with Ulver - Bergtatt
if you want something cold, atmospheric, terrifying, haunting, amazing try Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
if you want something like that but more accessible try Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
if you want something just plain fuckin awesome try Bathory - Blood Fire Death
but there's so much good shit dude just dive in, have a blast

"Is this a good starting place for black metal?"
Personally I'd say this is not really the best place to start when it comes to black metal. While this is DT's best album it has a lot of death metal elements to it. If your just starting to dip your toes into the black metal waters id suggest starting with these. The albums listed were some of the albums that acted as gateways to the genre for me.
Windir - Arntor (Folky BM)
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse (Symphonic BM)
Weakling - Dead As Dreams (Atmospheric BM)
Immortal - At The Heart Of Winter (BM with Riffz up the wazoo)
Once you get used to black metal tho, I highly recommend checking out this album.

Haha, thanks dude. That should be helpful

Storm of the Light's Bane is probably the album I would recommend to start with in the genre. One of the best and easy to get into.
|
| |
I never got the hype around it tbh, prefer Somberlain
I can understand it being great to people who are more dm-oriented tho
|
| |
lol wtf

The fuck?
