lol I have no idea
on the other hand does anyone think this album might be the reason why bass is neglected in modern metal?

Probably not considering everyone hates the lack of bass on this album

I might just be talking out of my ass, but I'd guess it has more to do with the loudness wars of the 90s combined with the fact that metal is so riff driven that the guitar has been given more and more prominence in the mix as the years have gone on

Nah that totally makes sense. I was just thinking about it because I've seen interviews with many younger metal and metalcore bands that cite AJFA songs over Metallica's other albums and I drew a thin link there.

As someone who's been listening to Metallica about as long as I've been playing electric bass guitar, and way longer than electric guitar or drums, since I was 13, it obviously annoys me on here, especially given how great some of the basslines themselves are, even if they're just following the guitar most of the time. The first half of One however is a good example of it branching off and doing its own thing, and it really adds to how great that song turned out.

The production irked the hell out of me at first, it's why I've had this for seven months without rating it, but I'm at the point now where it's annoying for a few minutes until you just get used to it. The guitar really does sound great, even if it has to cranked up a bit, and as clicky and annoying as the drums sound you get used to it. I'm actually comfortable to rate this at 4.5 now, songwriting is too strong.

The songwriting and lyrics are at their peak here. Lars even pulls off some sweet fills and goes outside his comfort zone.

songwriting is not at their peak here since some of the songs tend to get slightly repetitive and drag a bit, but yea Lars is on the top of his game here
