This is underrated, only bested by Cosmogramma

Definitely underrated.
Cosmogramma & YD! are his "wacky" albums, & LA & UTQC his meditative albums. The atmosphere on this is so beautiful and... wombic?

Yea but Cosmogramma is really beautiful too, You’re Dead is in a class of its own with how wacky and energetic it is. Probably why it’s my least favorite, but still a great album for sure.

Cosmogramma barreely tops this for me. They're all fuckin rad. I'd genuinely be shocked if this next album doesn't keep up with how consistent he's always been.
YD! is also my least favorite probably for the same reason

I'm guessing the new one will follow in that direction, especially with the guest singers, but yea I'm sure it'll be great regardless.

Just look at the feature list. Man has like 10 guaranteed slapper with high profile collabs and he dropped the song that's just David Lynch talking as a single. it's gonna be the greatest album of all time lmao
|
| |
Theres also the flawless track record too

New album is honestly so fucking boring

Yeah I think this guy is a supreme genius of the 21st century--albeit with some (2) albums that are better than (2) others etc., and a fairly nondescript beat tape debut--but I don't want to listen to that again

He clearly has some great ideas and stellar production, but so much of the album is kind of just there. Meandering for the sake of it. Although the production is sort of part of the problem for me on the new one. It's got that (what I consider) washed out Thundercat sound. Slick as hell but homogeneous af. Very little to latch onto outside of Black Balloons and Fire Is Coming. Imo this and Cosmogramma are peak FlyLo

I agree with you wholly, as is often the case. I also am not sure what he was trying to do by integrating that clav keyboard sound into so many of the tracks. Feels like an odd angle

Agreed, albums a bit gimmicky overall. Also I was so pumped for some of the features and most of them disappointed epically. Esp Little Dragon, such a w.e track from a band I really like.
|

the funk-jazz-electronic hybrid sound needs to die. flylo should never have befriended thundercat. prob won't bother with the new one

the fusiony tony williams lifetime type stuff on you're dead! and the free jazz stylings of "german haircut" (cosmogramma) to me are perfectly rendered enough that I don't want to abandon the generic melding but yah it's just a boring record

totally agree with your added sentence about thundercat lol, and he has a credit on like everything on the new record.

Literally everything I've heard by Thundercat has sounded sterile as hell. Can't recall a single joint I thought was dope.

the last song on Apocalypse, produced by flying lotus, is gorgeous

See I've heard that album in its entirety - twice, I think. Could just be that I was so drained by the time the last track came on that I didn't pay it any mind. Will go back and check it out.
