I feel like this gets more shit than it deserves cause it's Contortionist coming off Exoplanet, so there were high expectations for this, but the band wasn't sure what direction to take yet. If a new band came out with this I feel like it would get praised more. I really dig the mathy alien-prog feel of this, though I prefer Language and Exo.

Yea I pretty much agree, this is pretty great, at least 7/10. It has a lot of what I've grown to love about Language, just worse production and more ADD songwriting. They really perfected their sound on Language, I'd love more stuff like that. Basically where Cynic should've gone after Traced in Air.

not like I was the biggest fan of this band but I noticed it sounding a bit better
changing the synths was a fuckin weird choice tho

Yea I don't get why they did the Exoplanet remaster

-core production was getting sleeker and they prob didn't want the record to sound like it's stuck in '09-'10

This is one of those release that I really loved when I was just getting into prog music years ago and I probably wont love it that much these days.
However, I think that their first singer put in a much better performance than Lessard. He could be great, but all he really does is sing in that quiet, monotone almost mumbly voice that doesnt fit the music imo.

in a way I get that Lessard was doing his part to transition the band's sound towards Language, but honestly more harsh vox was needed there still. he's good at em but I bet he's favored not doing those again.

I love Lessard's harsh vocals, I wish he'd use them more
